STAGE BOTTLES – 30 Years Always Antifascist !
Stage Bottles were founded in 1993. The first line-up was recruited from a circle of close
friends from the antifascist skinhead-scene in Frankfurt. At this time there was a hard fight for
the real non-fascist skinhead-attitude in public and against the Neo-Nazi-scene. The Stage
Bottles were part of this process right from the start.
Later there were several changes in the line-up as a result of - mostly - changes in private life
like founding a family or for reasons in work-life. So there are different drummers playing on
every so far released album. The leaving of the band of the female singer Manu in 1999 was
one of the most effecting changes in history of the band. The female voice was – next to the
use of the saxophone – one of the most characteristic elements of the music of the Stage
Bottles. The saxophone – originally used at the start due to the non-existence of a solo-
guitar-player – is still one of the most recognized characteristics of the band. Even those
people who think that a saxophone normally doesn’t fit to Punk-Rock changed their minds.
In the last 30 years the Stage Bottles released seven albums, four 7-Inches, one Live-album,
one Best-Of-CD (2003) and three spilt-7-Inches with Los Fastidios, Scrapy and No Respect.
Additionally there were some exclusive songs released on compilations. The closest
cooperation the band has had in the past was with the record-labels Mad-Butcher-Records
and Knock-Out-Records.
The Stage Bottles already played a few hundred concerts so far. Not just in Germany.
There were also concerts in Canada, Russia, Belarus, Britain, Ireland, Northern Ireland,
Spain, France, Poland, Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Netherlands, Croatia,
Denmark, Norway, Serbia, Slowenia, Italy and Greece.
The basic topics in the lyrics are giving motivation for antifascist actions, a critical point of
view to society and capitalism, a strong affinity to football and its subcultural elements on the
terraces and also topics from daily life. The topics were lyrically sometimes handled in an
unusual way compared to other Punkrockbands.
The Stage Bottles are playing on many antifascist events and also on other concerts with a
left-wing background. Also in the football-scene – especially in the Ultra-scene – the Stage
Bottles have got a big influence with their clear positioning. They are often invited to events
organized by groups like these to many cities in Germany and Europe.
In the past the Stage Bottles convinced a large number of people to leave the right-wing-
scene. The Stage Bottles show the possibility of another subcultural alternative with a more
healthy environment and attitude.
According to the political attitude the Stage Bottles have got no commercial interests.
Also in the football-scene – especially in the Ultra-scene – the Stage Bottles have got a big
influence with their clear positioning. They are often invited to events organized by groups
like these to many cities in Germany and Europe. A couple of band-members are very much
involved into the football-scene of different clubs themselves.
The music-style can be described as a melodic-aggressive Punkrock with an orientation on
the classic English Punkrock with all its musical flexibility.
The title of the song « Sometimes anti-social – but always anti-fascist » developed over the
years since 1999 to a worldwide used antifascist slogan. You can find this slogan
professionally painted on the back of one terrace of the football stadium of FC. St. Pauli, for
example.
The song „Dead but not forgiven“ – expression of being glad that Ian Stuart Donaldson (the
singer of the neo-nazi-band Skrewdriver ) died in a car-crash in September 1993 – provoked
some serious confrontations with neo-nazis especially with members from the the
organisation “Blood and Honor”. This threatening by Nazis is still a topic but the strong
following of the band and the awareness of promoters defended always the concerts
successfully. Bombalarms and threatenings to life luckily never had any consequences.
The Stage Bottles also were taking part in different ways in some movie-productions: on the
soundtrack of the Hollywood-production “Greenstreet 2” the song « Sometimes anti-social –
but always anti-fascist » was used. In the documentary “Skinheads” from 1995 and
“Skinhead Attitude” from 2005 band-members were interviewed and pictures from concerts
were shown. In the German production “Gegengerade” – it’s a story about members of the
FC. St. Pauli-supporters-scene – three songs were used for the soundtrack.
The biggest „Hits“of the Stage Bottles are Songs like „Sometimes Anti-Social – but always
Anti-fascist“, „Hooligan“, „Solidarity“, „Russia“, „All you need is hate“, „Too young to die“,
„Come together“, “Itchy Life” and a few more.
The latest release was the album “Fair Enough” and the 7-Inch “One World One Crew”.
Both releases can be ordered via the contact of the band
Though there were many changes in the line-up the Stage Bottles are still alive after 30
years of rock ‘n’ rolling. The band saved its origin style of lyrics and music. They’ve still got a
large number of followers and they will continue until – the end!
In December 2023 the 30th anniversary will take place.
In December 2023 a new album with the title “We need each other” will be released.on
Fettfleck Records/Cargo.
