Nur wenigen ist es in den letzten zehn Jahren gelungen, die Schnittstelle zwischen elektronischer Musik, bildender Kunst, Technologie und Wissenschaft so erfolgreich zu hinterfragen und zu erweitern wie Max Cooper.  In Zusammenarbeit mit engen Partnern und großen Institutionen wie dem Barbican, Zaha Hadid Architects und Dolby hat Cooper einen medienübergreifenden Ansatz für seine Werke entwickelt.  Ob begehbare Lichtinstallationen, der bahnbrechende Einsatz von immersivem Sound oder clubtaugliche Techno-Veröffentlichungen – Coopers Schaffen ist ein klassischer Fall von elektronischer Erkundung, die sich der verfügbaren Technologie bedient und gleichzeitig auf das verweist, was vor ihr kam, und zwar auf menschliche Weise.

Was den aus Belfast stammenden Künstler nun antreibt, als er sich für sein viertes Studioalbum Yearning for the Infinite auf einen neuen Zyklus begibt, ist, durch Technologie und Maschinen einen bleibenden menschlichen Eindruck zu schaffen.  Das Projekt, das Film- und Webmedien sowie Coopers typisch üppigen und gefühlvollen Stil umfasst, entstand durch eine Einladung des Barbican, das Cooper bat, mit dem Thema "Life Rewired" zu arbeiten.  Auf der daraus resultierenden LP Yearning for the Infinite beackert er weiterhin das fruchtbare Land der "großen Akkordprogressionen und Mikro-Glitch-Details", das die Hörer auf den vorherigen Alben Human, Emergence und One Hundred Billion Sparks in seinen Bann gezogen hat.  Anschließend erweckt er sie zum Leben, indem er mit abstrakten visuellen und akustischen Mitteln eine wirklich eindrucksvolle Geschichte erzählt", ganz in der Tradition von Coopers Haupteinflüssen Philip Glass und Chris Cunningham.

Indem er seine Interessen zusammenführt und sie auf eine zugängliche Art und Weise präsentiert, die sich dem konventionellen Format entzieht, erforscht Cooper Konzepte von Emergenz, Identität und Unendlichkeit, um ein Eintauchen in Klang, Vision und Konzept zu schaffen, das seine Hörer*innen und Zuschauer*innen völlig aus der normalen Erfahrung von Realität herausholt und sie an einen neuen Ort versetzt.  Im Kern geht es Max Cooper als Musiker, DJ und interdisziplinärer Künstler darum, ein größeres Verständnis zu provozieren.

Few have been so successful in interrogating and furthering the intersection between electronic music, visual art, technology and science in the past decade as Max Cooper.  Working with close collaborators and large-scale institutions like the Barbican, Zaha Hadid Architects and Dolby, Cooper has developed a mixed-media approach to creation.  Whether a walk-through light installations, groundbreaking use of immersive sound, or club-ready techno releases, Cooper’s output is a classic case of electronic exploration that makes use of available technology while referencing that which came before it, and does so in a human way.

What now drives the Belfast-born artist as he set out on a fresh cycle for his fourth studio album Yearning for the Infinite was to create a lasting human impression through technology and machinery.  The project, which encompasses film and web media as well as Cooper’s typically lush and emotive style, arose through an invitation from the Barbican, asking Cooper to respond to their annual theme of “Life Rewired.”  On the resultant LP Yearning for the Infinite, he continues to till the fertile land of “big chord progressions and micro-glitch detailing” that captivated listeners across previous albums Human, Emergence and One Hundred Billion Sparks.  He then brings this to life via “really impactful storytelling through the medium of abstract visuals and audio,” as in the lineage of Cooper’s key influences Philip Glass and Chris Cunningham.

Synthesising his interests and presenting it in an accessible way that defies conventional format, Cooper explores concepts of emergence, identity and infinity to create an immersion of sound, vision and concept that can totally remove you from your normal experience of reality and put you somewhere new.  At the core, Max Cooper’s mission as a musician, a DJ and an interdisciplinary artist is all about provoking a greater understanding.
