WINDOWS

In the heart of Berlin Alexanderplatz you find Platte Berlin, the “Plattenbau" at Mehmhardstaße 8, which was the prefab sparkling trophy in the late years of DDR. Nowadays it embodies Berlins’ culture and is an icon of its history. Platte recently opened its large downstairs store as an exhibition space for the interdisciplinary world of fashion and culture.

Artists Katharina Trudzinski and Colette Vermeulen have joined forces and present a collaborative window exhibition that is fuelled with playfulness, innovation, colour and sustainability. These Berlin based female artists reflect on the current times of uncertainty and intensity. They do so by creating bold and expressive objects in the hope to spread optimism and find beauty in public, objects and materials around us. , After more than a year of digital communication and being indoors, their work aims to cultivate tactility and sensory input through craft and handwork. Focusing on the shifts between the second and third dimension, they create an interaction of the outside and internal worlds, which can be viewed through the window, a semiabstracted illusion.

Katharina is a Berlin-based sculptor. She studied textildesign and art at hfbk Hamburg. Her work includes three-dimensional wall pieces, large scale sculpures and installations. Katharina's aesthetic solutions seem to come out of nowhere, balancing the challenge of physical forces and humor.

Katharina Trudzinski's sculptural Window installation consists of found pieces of furniture, shelves, chairs, cabinet walls and wooden panels. These elements are united through their black and white color with chiaroscuro gradients to form a 3-dimensional tableau, which opens up surreal perspectives.

Colette is a Dutch artist and designer based in Berlin. She has a MA degree in fashion design at the Royal College of Art in London. In her work she explores the sensation and energy of emotions through colour, texture and movement and layering. She is interested in peoples connection and disconnection from nature, their intuition and unconscious thoughts. Her main media are paper pulp sculptures, paper collage and screen-print.

For Windows, Colette Vermeulen has created sculptures made from cardboard boxes, found in the streets during the pandemic, that she covered in pulp made from her own recycled paper. Dynamic and textured, the objects act as abstracted characters that embody and explore internal emotional and physical forces, expressions of sensations that cannot be communicated with words.
