Cultural and historical artefacts, as well as both media and artistic sources are combined and confronted in new contexts within the practice of Dutch artist Willem de Rooij (born 1969 in Beverwijk, NL). For the fall, KW Institute for Contemporary Art presents a selection of works by de Rooij from the past 20 years, which will also feature earlier works that were made during his collaboration with Jeroen de Rijke (1970–2006). The hybrid manifestations of our present are central to de Rooij’s approach. His sometimes abstract works frequently contain socio-political commentaries. Cultural exchanges and their discontents play an important role. Point of Departure: Willem de Rooij, Lucy Skaer is funded by the Senate Department for Culture and Europe, Berlin. The exhibition by Willem de Rooij is kindly supported by the Mondriaan Fund and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Berlin. Partner of the Berlin Art Week Image: Jeroen de Rijke/Willem de Rooij, I’m Coming Home in Forty Days, 1997, Production Still, Courtesy of Galerie Buchholz and Willem de Rooij
